It is not new that Microsoft has stopped supporting Windows XP which has been around for more than a decade. So what does it mean when they say that they stop supporting a certain OS? It simply means that Microsoft will stop releasing patches and security updates for the said OS. As we all know, it would be a big risk to use a computer without updated patches. Microsoft has ended their support for XP last year but still, many are still using the said operating system.
It is not cheap to migrate from windows XP to Windows 7 or 8 especially for companies but money is not always the problem. In the US, the US Navy is still using Windows XP for their warfare systems. It is not because they could not afford it because as we all know that they do, but the problem is, the system that they are using are reliant on Windows XP.
As I have said, it would be very dangerous to use an operating system without updated patches and you might be thinking that why they are still using Windows XP. Are they using it even if Microsoft is not releasing… updates? According to reports, the US Navy has still around 100,000 workstations that are still running Windows XP and the only way that they could still use the said OS with updates is to pay for it.
It is said that the US Navy paid millions of dollars to continuously receive updates from Microsoft. This is to ensure that there will still be patches and security updates that will protect the said systems and to minimize vulnerabilities.
It is not only the US Navy that is still using Windows XP on their systems but other companies as well. Again, it is not that easy to migrate to a newer operating system especially if the system or program that you are using is only compatible with Windows XP.
Personally, I have used Windows XP for several years and upgrading to Windows 7 years back was not easy due to programs that are not supported. The only way that you could continue using it is to update the said programs so that it would support the newer operating systems.
Lastly, Windows XP is one of the most stable operating system but still, Microsoft would find ways on how to improve it so that they could develop a better operating system.
