The term broadband is very much heard nowadays from residential Internet users. Most of them prefer to have broadband connection than the usual Internet connection using telephone lines for dial-up with less than 56kbps speed rate. This term is becoming popular because of its fast accessibility and reliability.
But what is broadband and why it is becoming popular.
Generally speaking, broadband refers to an Internet connection that uses “fiber optic” technology for communication. This is the only difference of broadband compare to the recent internet connections that we have. Since it uses fiber optics technology the broadband connection has wide range of frequencies that is used to transmit information.
The wide range of frequencies enables information to be sent in different frequencies that can result to more information being transmitted in a limited period of time. This is why broadband is commonly referred to high-speed Internet connection.
Do you have an idea of broadband connections minimum rate?
To cite: Jupiter communication assigned a minimum data rate for broadband connection which is 256 kbps.
If we will based on the speed rate of broadband connection we can therefore conclude that broadband is really fast compare to a dial-up connection which can provide until 56kbps only. With the speed rate that it offers, more and more users opt to subscribe in broadband Internet connection.
Imagine this, if you will be browsing a well search or used sites like face book and you tube, you need to have a high speed Internet connection to handle large data transmission and avoid traffic in your connection. And we all know that only broadband connection is the option that everyone will choose.
So how it differ with an ordinary dial-up Internet connection?
Let us put it this way, imagine an expressway and an ordinary highway. An express way offers wider space that can handle numbers of vehicles in fast speed. In an ordinary highway, two lanes are mostly provided for vehicles causing traffic during peak hours. The expressway describes a broadband connection and an ordinary highway for a dial-up connection.
Nowadays, the broadband connections available in different areas are DSL and cable modems. Both are using fiber optic technology for communication which allows large amount of information be transferred regardless of the distance of the recipient in short period of time.
Most of the DSL connections were provided by telephone companies. Telephone companies use fiber optic or copper wire technology for all DSL lines. Most of them opt to have fiber optic since it is cheaper compare to copper wire.
On the other hand, cable broadband was offered by TV cable companies. Its system of process is almost the same with cable TV; they only provide modem for cable Internet connection.
Are you confused what to choose?
Most of the Internet subscriber opts to have DSL broadband because most of it has telephone lines included on the package. For them is cheaper and practical option. The only problem with this was most DSL connection are shared in one backbone. Therefore your internet connection is somehow almost similar with an ordinary dial-up during peak hours.
On the other hand, cable broadband maintains its high speed connection regardless of the number of its subscriber. The only problem with this is during storm period or if there is a heavy rain, mostly the connection is being cut by the provider.
There are other broadband connections available like the wireless broadband, the satellite broadband, and the most expensive the leased line connection.
So what is your choice of broadband connection?
